Equine Elective Surgery

 

 

Avon Animal Hospital is proud to be one of only two hospitals in Atlantic Canada outside the Atlantic Veterinary College to house an Equine Surgical Facility. Our surgical suite was built in 1997 with the needs of the local equine industry in mind. Our facility is equipped with the following:

  • Equine Hoist

  • Modern Equine Surgery Table

  • Gas Anesthetic Machine

  • Cardiac Monitoring Device

  • Padded Recovery Stall

  • Padded Equine Head Mask for Recovery


What is an Elective Surgery? Elective surgeries are procedures arranged in advance so that all equipment can be prepared and the necessary personnel scheduled.

Who Performs the Surgery? All standard surgical procedures are performed by one of our veterinarians or for more advanced surgical procedures, by a visiting a Board Certified surgeon.

Who Performs the Anesthesia? Anesthesia is also performed and monitored by one of our veterinarians. 

What Surgeries can be Performed at Avon Animal Hospital? Routine elective surgical procedures include soft tissue, orthopedic and minor abdominal surgery:

  • Hernia Repair

  • Cryptorchid Repair

  • Arthroscopy

  • Neurectomy

  • Desmotomy & Tedonectomy

  • Enucleation

  • Other surgeries may be arranged

How often are Elective Surgeries Performed? We are currently have dedicated surgery days approximately every two to three months.
