Freezing Semen & Storage

We are presently freezing stallion semen using the traditional method preferred by most North American Veterinary Colleges. Dr. Paul Johnston was trained in semen freezing techniques at the University of Florida and is now offering this service. Avon Animal Hospital has purchased the latest in semen freezing equipment which has been used for several successful freezes. When a stallion is collected for freezing, on average the procedure results in 10 breeding doses. However, it is important for stallion owners to realize that not all stallion sperm freeze well. Unfortunately, this may only be realized after analyzing semen that has been frozen and thawed. Most stallions are collected using an artificial vagina (AV), at a facility close to our clinic. The ejaculate containing the sperm is then processed immediately. Although an AV is used, a mare in heat is required for a successful collection. This can often be arranged ahead of time given ample notice.  Frozen  semen must be stored in a liquid nitrogen tank, and can be stored for you at AAH. Please contact Dr. Johnston for more details.
