6 Cool Canine Summer Hacks

We all know the basics of keeping our pets cool as cucumbers in hot weather… like never ever leaving them in a vehicle, providing lots of clean drinking water, staying clear of hot asphalt, and keeping them indoors when temperatures rise. But this hot dog has some other tricks up his furry little sleeve to keep your canines (and cats too!) cool during the dog days of summer.

Freeze A Treat. Pupsicles are a tasty option to help your dog stay cool. Try filling your puppy’s puzzle toy with soft food blended with chicken broth or water, and stick it in the freezer. Catsicles are a great option for our feline friends too – recipe below!

Freeze a Toy. Add water, treats and your dogs favourite toys to a plastic container and place in the freezer till frozen. Pop it out of the container and let them have at it. You’ll keep your pup cool and entertained for hours.

Make Your Own Mist. Wrap a hose around a pole using a bungee cord to hold it in place. Put on the “mist” option and allow the cool spray into the backyard. He’ll love laying beneath it and running through it.

Plan A Pool Party. Provide a kiddie wading pool in the shade for your dog’s splashing pleasure. Drop in a few floating dog toys and invite his friends over! Be sure tiny pups are always chaperoned as the poolside may be too high for them to climb out.

Bring the Beach Home. Wet sand stays cool for days, so why not build them a sandbox in a shaded corner of the yard? You’ll have no problem letting your dog dig in their own sandbox plus they’ll stay cool in the heat of the day.

Fit them with Cool Technology. The same technology used to keep human athletes cool and comfortable during hot weather also works for pets. You can find cooling bandanas, collars, jackets and mats at pet product outlets.
